FAQ

What's the difference between a hobbyist and a professional woodworker?

Hobbyists like making things with wood. Professionals focus more on quality. Hobbyists tend to take pride and share their creations with family and friends. Professionals will spend hours researching designs before they begin working on a project. They will pay attention to every detail, from selecting the best materials to finishing the project perfectly.

Can this be a way to make money?

Yes! Many woodworkers have this ability. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for woodworkers was $34,000 in May 2012. This is much higher than the national median of $31,000 per annum.

What kind wood should I use for my project?

The most commonly used woods for woodworking are oak, maple, cherry. Each type of wood has unique characteristics that affect the look and feel of the final product. Oak, for instance, is darker and harder than most other woods. Birch is lightweight and soft while mahogany is heavier and denser. There are two options: solid wood and veneers. Veneers consist of thin sheets made from wood and glued together to form a single layer.

Is it hard to start my own woodworking business?

It is not easy to start a woodworking business. There are many laws and regulations you need to be aware of. This doesn't necessarily mean that you should go through all the work of setting up a company. Many people choose to join existing businesses. This will allow you to avoid paying membership fees and taxes.

What tools work best for me?

When shopping for tools, it helps to think about your needs and preferences. Do you prefer metal handles or plastic? What size of nails and screws do your hands use most? Would you rather use hand tools than power tools?

Statistics

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Average lumber prices rose about 600 percent between April 2020 and May 2021. (familyhandyman.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)

How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood refers to applying chemicals to wood's surface. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change in color. The wood will turn from white to brownish-red due to the chemical reaction. The most common type of wood used for staining is oak, although many other types of wood can be stained.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Others use a solution made up of water and dye, which is then applied directly onto the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

Preparing the surface is the most important step in staining wooden surfaces. The wood must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all grease and dirt. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. Next, you need to decide which stain you want. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating and non-penetrating wood stains penetrate deeper than other types, making them perfect for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

After you've decided what type of stain to apply, get ready for your tools. You can use a paintbrush to apply stains. This allows you spread the liquid evenly over the surface. After you're done painting, make sure to have some rags handy to remove any excess stain. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. You can wipe down the entire furniture using a damp rag with clean water. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. Next, apply the stain to the furniture by starting at one end. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. Be careful not to let the stain drip off the wood's edge. Let the stain dry completely before proceeding with the next steps.

Protect the painted surface with a coat polyurethane paint sealant. Three coats are recommended for polyurethane. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
