Many artists are discovering the beauty of chainsaw wood carving. It is a natural extension to their skills set and often includes a mixture of traditional carving techniques with modern designs. Since the 1960s, Crager and Tracie Dugas have been carving beautiful wood pieces. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters help out with staining or painting occasionally. They prefer white pine because it is lighter than other types of pine and is less likely to crack.
Rich Anderson
Rich Anderson, a chainsaw wood carver from Reedsport in Oregon, is Rich Anderson. Anderson is a Poughkeepsie native and lives with his son and wife. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. Anderson has created many sculptures on Long Island, and even one in Colorado. His sculptures range from tall trees to small pieces such as corn ear sculptures. He is currently working to create a sign for Youngs Farm, Riverhead.
The $400 chainsaw lets him create intricate sculptures that would have taken days to chisel from a tree. Chainsaw wood carving can also be used to create beautiful sculptures that are more environmentally friendly than hammers and chisels. Anderson uses word-of-mouth to promote his business. Anderson has carved a huge cobra as well as a great blue heron in Wading river for a mechanic.
Tracie Dugas
Tracie Dugas has created a life-size Wizard from wood. This is a great example of her skill as an expert chainsaw wood carver. The 49-year old woman lives in Clare, Nova Scotia between Digby & Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was one of several artists who exhibited their work during the Canada Day weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.
Tim Crager
Tim Crager, while he didn't consider him an artist and wasn't very skilled with a saw chainsaw, turned his passion into a full time career in carving six years back. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was brought up in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. As a child, he watched a chainsaw carver at work. He was captivated by the artist's work and called his boss to give him his notice for two weeks.

Crager favors white pine over other wood types because it is easily accessible from tree trimming companies. Many people prefer different types of wood. Crager is a follower of the grain and allows the saw to guide his creations. Although Crager is usually clear about what he intends to do before he starts a project, he can change his mind at any time. The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

How To
How do I accurately measure wood?
Wood measurement can be done using several methods. We use a digital scale (a tool for measuring distances), a laser-level (used to level your work surface), as well as a bubble level (used in order to level your work surface).
A digital caliper has two jaws that open and close. One jaw holds a measured object and the other measures distances between the points. The digital caliper is great for measuring small distances like thicknesses of wood.
Laser levels emit an infrared laser beam that projects a straight line across the floor. The laser emits a red dot on the line. By looking down the line, you can see whether the surface is even or not. Large surfaces can be checked for accuracy with laser levels.
Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The center of the device contains a bubble. As long as the bubble remains centered, the device can tell you if the surface has been leveled. Bubble levels are good for checking the accuracy of smaller areas.
