Traditional Swedish handicraft

Traditional Swedish handicrafts for carving Dala horses are made from pine wood. They are a popular souvenir of Sweden. Because these carvings are handcrafted, each horse's size and shape will be slightly different from the others. According to some aficionados, only Dala Horses made in Nusnas are authentic. Anders Henriksson, a Nusnas-based Dala Horse seller, began selling them in 1926. His sons, Nils and Jannes Olsson, a couple of schoolmates, began helping their big brother. They took this tradition seriously and started a small workshop.

The Biblical Jonah story explains that Jonah used a wooden horse as a means of transporting himself in the desert. This is the inspiration for the Dala Horse's original design. The wooden horse was carved in rich colors and decorated with floral designs. In the 19th century, the wooden horse became a popular toy, and Dala Horses were created using wood scraps, paint-pigment from nearby copper mines, and long winter nights. The traditions of carving a Dala horse vary among woodsmen and soldiers. By the 1870s, they were painted with brightly colored designs and wore flower-patterned saddles.

Origin

Dala horses have been painted for centuries and are considered a Swedish art form. The tradition of painting Dala horses has its roots in Swedish furniture. This intricate ornamental style was used to decorate furniture during the seventeenth and 18th century. Most often, these paintings were done by itinerant painters from the Dalarna region of Sweden. Since then, Dala horse painting has been a popular art form.

Many stories are told about this tradition. Some say it dates back to the 15th century, when foresters in central Swedish villages carved toy horses by fire. Swedish furniture makers used slow-growth pine from Dalarna forests for many years. Also, it is possible that leftover wood was used. Although there is no evidence to support this, the Dala horse tradition lives on. This horse has become Sweden's national symbol.

Size

A Dalah horse is a traditional, distinctive toy. There are many Dala horses. The sizes and shapes of these horses vary. They are available in various sizes, including lean, stocky, and medium-sized horses. These majestic creatures are from the Mora village in Dalarna, Sweden. They are loved worldwide. These beautiful creatures were originally carved by Swedish woodcutters while they were away from their day-to-day responsibilities. A Dalah horse is one wooden toy that has endured the test.

Dala horses are very popular in Sweden. However, until 1939, when a 2.5 meter Dala horse was placed outside the Swedish pavilion at New York’s World Exhibition, little else knew about them. The Dala Horse was loved by so many people that they were sent to America in 1940. Today, Dala Horses are primarily orange and red in color, but they can be painted any color, or left plain. In Sweden, the Avesta Municipality displays one of the largest Dala Horses.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. We will be using the "pocket-hole joint", which involves drilling holes in wood and then gluing them together. This works well if the wood is straight and smooth. If your wood isn't straight or flat, you might want to try another method, such as dowel joinery. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
  3. Glue together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Let it sit for about 5 minutes before clamping the pieces together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

You should leave enough space between the pieces to allow you to turn them inside-out.
